In 1864 Dr. Shreber lead the movement to establish small garden plots within the city, given that so many people living in tenements had no access to fresh fruits and vegetables. The idea spread quickly to German speaking countries and to the Netherlands. Aspects of the gardens: raising bees, a pond with frogs, a playground, kitchens for garden parties, fruit trees, a pizza oven, a place to relax. A kitchen shed.
